I Died & Went to Wine Heaven – Drake Hotel, Chicago

Vintage Portfolio Tasting SignI was lucky to be invited to the Winebow Vintage Portfolio Tasting at the Drake Hotel  by Anna Lisa Tempestini. She is the proprietor and winemaker at Fattoria Resta in Buonconvento, Tuscany.

Vintage Portfolio Tasting Wine GlassesGetting in early was nice as it gave me time to peruse the tables and have some good conversations with the wine makers.  Two that I am really excited to share are Martin del Nero and Root: 1.

Martin Del NeroFrattoria Resta was built as a monastery in 1573 by Martin del Nero and is now home to Anna Lisa, her family and the namesake label. Producing in small quantities allows Anna Lisa to oversee every detail. In addition to wine she holds cooking classes, makes her own olive oil, teaches yoga and happens to be one of the nicest people I have met. Her vineyard is breathtaking and should be on anyone’s to-do list in Italy. Her passion for wine and people is truly inspiring.

If you don’t get the chance to go to Italy you are in luck as Winebow Inc. represents Anna Lisa’s wine in the US. Her wine Martin del Nero is carried in D.C., Chicago and NYC in restaurants such as the well-respected Piccolo Sogno and Maialino. Look for it to pop up in more restaurants soon!

The 100% Sangiovese is full and bold with a hint of sweet that makes you want to keep drinking.

The second wine can be found in many retail and grocery stores in Chicago, Root: 1 from Santa Blanca, Chile.

Root 1 wine Sauvignon BlancSustainable production makes this an attractive wine along with its very accessible price. I was pleasantly surprised by the richness of the Cabernet and Carmenere. The latter having a nice spice taste at the end. The Sauvignon Blanc was full of citrus and on the sweeter side.

Whole Food, Mariano’s, Binny’s and more carry Root:1. Prices are $10 and up.

Cheers!
